Should Your Wedding be Plugged or Unplugged?

It seems that we live in a time where everyone has a phone. These aren’t just little flip phones with the basic calling and texting features, but they are essentially tiny computers in the palm of everyone’s hand. Ideally, guests would already know the proper digital etiquette for weddings and other special events, but what if they don’t?

Memories should be cherished. Most people spend a substantial amount of money for a photographer to capture their special day. Obviously, you wouldn’t want your guests holding up their smartphones and standing in the photographer’s way. Not only is it inconsiderate, but it can ruin photographs that were meant to capture your special day as a keepsake for years to come.

Guests can also become distracted during your event. If this is your special day, shouldn’t their attention be on you? An event with the majority of guests looking down at the device in their hand isn’t too appealing. Not only can the guests become distracted, but they can distract those around them too.

Pictures can be posted on social media sites without your knowledge. You should be in control of which pictures to share and when to share them. You may not want one of your guests sharing a picture of your wedding gown before you’ve even finished walking down the aisle.

If you think there’s no way to have an unplugged event, think again. Although it’s frequently celebrities who choose to go unplugged at their weddings or other events, many others are choosing to follow this trend to make their day even more special. Many people think of it as a daunting task to go unplugged, but it doesn’t have to be.

You can include the request on the event website or on a special insert in the invitation that explains that the event will be unplugged. On the day of the event, have a designated station for guests to deposit their phones, similar to a coat check. This station can include a seating area for guests who may need to use their phones in the middle of the event.

With proper planning, you can have an unplugged event, without the worries of inappropriate digital etiquette. Contact us, and let us do the planning for you.
